The Battle of Monmouth was an inconclusive battle of the American Revolutionary War fought on June 28, 1778. The main American Continental Army under George Washington attacked the rear of the British Army's column led by Sir Henry Clinton as they left Monmouth Court House (modern Freehold, New Jersey).American General Charles Lee led the advance and initiated the first attack on the column's rear. When the British turned to flank him, he ordered a general retreat, which soon became disorganized. Washington argued with Lee, then personally rallied the troops and repelled two counterattacks. On a very hot day, the battle was a standoff. Both sides lost as many men to sunstroke as to the enemy. British losses were 103 dead and 161 wounded, while the Americans lost 147 dead and 170 wounded. Both sides retired at nightfall.
The battle was the last major engagement of the northern theatre, and the largest one-day battle of the war when measured in terms of participants. Lee was later court-martialed for his actions.

James Crofts Scott, Duke of Monmouth (April 9, 1649- July 15, 1685) recognized by some as James II of England and James VII of Scotland, was born in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, an illegitimate son of Charles II and his mistress, Lucy Walter who had followed him into continental exile after the execution of King Charles I. (However, Lucy had almost as bad a reputation as the prince himself, and it is not at all certain that he was the natural father.) There was talk of their having been secretly married, which would have made James the true and legitimate heir to the throne.Whatever the truth, Charles recognised James as his son, but did not make him his heir - to have admitted marrying Lucy Walter would have threatened his marriage to the Portuguese princess, Catherine of Braganza. In 1663, shortly after having been brought to England, he was created Duke of Monmouth and married off to the wealthy Anne, Countess of Buccleuch. Although he showed no aptitude for government, James was popular, particularly since he was a Protestant, whereas the official heir to the throne, James, Duke of York, was a Catholic.
Following the discovery of the so-called Rye House Plot, Monmouth was obliged to go into exile in the Dutch United Provinces, where he fought in the Third Anglo-Dutch War. He returned on his father's death in an attempt to take the throne from his uncle. He declared himself King on June 20, 1685 at Bridgwater. On July 6, 1685 the two armies met at the Battle of Sedgemoor, the last to be fought on English (as opposed to British) soil. Monmouth's makeshift force could not compete with the regular army, and was soundly defeated. Monmouth himself was captured and arrested. Despite begging for mercy, he was executed on July 15, 1685, on Tower Hill.

This is about the Welsh town of Monmouth. For other uses, see Monmouth (disambiguation).
Monmouth is a historic town in south Wales, county town of the historic county of Monmouthshire. It is situated at the confluence of the River Wye and River Monnow, and hence the name Monmouth is an abbreviation of 'Monnow Mouth'.
Monmouth boasts a 13th century stone gated bridge, unique in Britain as it is the only preserved bridge of its design remaining. Work is currently being undertaken on a second Monnow crossing to relieve pressure from motor vehicles on the old bridge. This project however has meant the demolition of the old cattle market, thus Monmouth is no longer the market town it has traditionally been, however a farmers' market selling local produce is still held.
Some famous people associated with Monmouth include:
Monmouth is also the name of a county in central New Jersey, in the United States of America.
- Geoffrey of Monmouth, born in 1090 and wrote Historia Regum Britanniae, the 'History of British Kings'
- James, Duke of Monmouth, leader of the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685
- Henry V, born in Monmouth castle in 1387, who was immortalised in his victory at Agincourt and the square in the centre of town is named after this battle.
- William Jones, a liveryman of The Haberdashers Company and founder of the town's grammar schools.
- Lord Nelson, who payed two visits to the town and approved a naval temple on the nearby Kymin Hill. Monmouth is home to a large collection of Nelson material.
- Charles Rolls, who lived in Monmouth and was co-founder of the Rolls-Royce company and was the first man to make a non-stop crossing of the English Channel by plane. There is a statue of Charles Rolls in Agincourt square.
